O'Neil was a participant in the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005 when she was in high school. The judges were impressed with her singing and she made it into the Top 100 Round. O'Neil was praised highly by the judges. But she was a victim of massive losses during the Top 10 week and Top 9 week of the finals. Her score was within the bottom three followed by the bottom two. The judges were shocked, and they recommended that people decide for Melissa who was one of the contestants with the greatest singing abilities. O'Neil was consistently delivering stellar performances since then, always finished in the top three. Following two stunning performances on the 7th of September 2005, when O'Neil along with Rex Goudie were able to make it into the final two, the judge Werner said that headlines in the morning papers would read O'Neil defeated Goudie to become the third Canadian Idol, the first female winner, and also the youngest champion in the show's history . O'Neil was promptly congratulated by Canadian Premier Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
